Spiti Valley Bike Trip is a 9-day Royal Enfield Himalayan expedition that begins and ends in Chandigarh, taking you deep into the raw, high-altitude wilderness of one of India’s most remote and spectacular regions. From the lush apple orchards of Narkanda to the wind-sculpted desert plateaus of the Spiti Valley, every kilometre of this ride is a story in itself. The Spiti Valley Bike Trip sets off from Chandigarh on the Himalayan Expressway, climbing steadily towards Narkanda — Himachal Pradesh’s famed apple capital — before descending into the Kinnaur Valley to reach Chitkul, the last inhabited village before the Indo-Tibetan border. The route then winds through Kinnaur’s dramatic gorges and ancient villages, crossing the spectacular Khab Sangam where the Spiti and Satluj rivers collide, before climbing to the remote, sky-high village of Nako, perched at over 3,600 metres beside its sacred and serene Nako Lake.

Receive your Royal Enfield Himalayan (411cc or 450cc), complete a test ride, and confirm your comfort settings. Early morning departure from Chandigarh as you leave the plains and head toward the Himalayas. Ride the iconic Himalayan Expressway — the air turns crisp and the roads begin to twist upward through the Shivalik range. Pass through the bustling outskirts of Shimla, the old summer capital of British India. Watch the landscape transform from the plains into dense Himalayan forests of fir and spruce. Arrive at the quiet hamlet of Narkanda — surrounded by forests and offering a peaceful introduction to the higher altitudes ahead. Optional detour to Hatu Peak for sweeping panoramic views of the snow-covered Himalayan range. Team debrief for the route ahead, overnight stay in Narkanda.
Depart Narkanda as the terrain becomes more dramatic and the Kinnaur district unfolds before you. Ride through the famous Kinnaur Gate — a massive tunnel carved directly into the mountain face. Follow the roaring Sutlej River along sheer cliff-edge roads with breathtaking gorge views. Turn into the lush and scenic Sangla Valley — a basket of greenery amidst bare mountain faces. Explore the traditional wooden houses and rich cultural heritage of Sangla village. Arrive at Chitkul — the last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibetan border at 3,450 m. Walk along the pristine Baspa River with the backdrop of glaciated snow-capped peaks. Overnight stay in Chitkul — the true edge of India before the Tibetan plateau begins.
Depart Chitkul and leave the lush Baspa Valley behind as the landscape transforms dramatically. Enter the rain-shadow region — watch the lush green give way to a stark, arid high-altitude desert. Ride through Rekong Peo with stunning glimpses of the sacred Kinner Kailash Witness the dramatic confluence of the Spiti and Sutlej rivers at Khab Sangam. Tackle the infamous "Kazigs" — a series of hair-raising hairpin bends etched into near-vertical cliff faces. Climb to the high-altitude village of Nako, perched above its sacred glacial lake. Take a peaceful evening walk around the sacred Nako Lake and catch the stunning sunset. Overnight stay in Nako — absorb the silence of the high desert under a star-filled sky.
Depart Nako and head deeper into the ancient Spiti Valley. Stop at Gue Monastery to witness the remarkably preserved 500-year-old mummy of a Buddhist monk — one of the rarest sights in India. Ride to Tabo, home to the celebrated Tabo Monastery — often called the "Ajanta of the Himalayas". Marvel at the 1,000-year-old frescoes inside Tabo Monastery's ancient cave temples. Visit Dhankar Monastery, dramatically perched on a crumbling cliffside overlooking the Spiti Valley. Arrive in Kaza (3,800 m) — the administrative and commercial hub of the Spiti Valley. Explore Kaza's local market, monasteries, and cafes at leisure in the evening. Overnight stay in Kaza — your base camp for the next two days of high-altitude exploration.
Depart Kaza on the legendary high-altitude village circuit — a day of world records. Ride to Langza to see the iconic giant golden Buddha statue overlooking the valley below. Hunt for ancient marine fossils in Langza's fields — living proof that Spiti was once a seabed. Continue to Komic — officially the highest motorable village in Asia, connected by a motorable road. Stop at Hikkim to send a postcard from the world's highest post office — a certified world record holder. End the circuit at the iconic Kee Monastery — a fort-like structure serving as the main learning centre for monks in Spiti. Explore Kee Monastery's grand halls and take in the sweeping panoramic views of the Spiti Valley. Return to Kaza for overnight stay — celebrate the day's extraordinary high-altitude achievements.
Depart Kaza early — the most challenging and rewarding riding day of the entire expedition. Cross the architectural marvel of Chicham Bridge — the highest suspension bridge in Asia — spanning a dramatic gorge. Ascend to the mighty Kunzum La Pass at 15,060 ft — offer prayers at the Kunzum Devi temple atop the pass. Soak in sweeping panoramic views of the Spiti, Lahaul, and Chandratal basins from the summit. Descend from Kunzum La onto a narrow, rocky trail heading toward Chandratal. Arrive at Chandratal — the "Moon Lake" at 4,300 m — the turquoise water reflecting surrounding peaks is a sight to behold. Trek to the lake's edge for dramatic views of glaciers and the perfectly still Moon Lake. Spend the night at high-altitude campsites near Chandratal under a canopy of a billion Himalayan stars. 📌 Note: If roads to Chandratal stay closed due to bad weather, alternate accommodation will be arranged in Chatru, Manali, or Kaza.
Break camp early and begin the raw, adventure-packed ride from Chandratal toward Batal. Navigate multiple "nullahs" — water crossings — and technical rocky riverbeds. Experience true Himalayan off-roading — raw, challenging, and utterly unforgettable. Stop at the legendary Batal for a warm meal at the iconic Chacha Chachi Dhaba. Continue the descent, heading toward the 9-km engineering marvel Atal Tunnel. Pass through the Atal Tunnel — bypassing the treacherous Rohtang Pass — and transition instantly from barren Lahaul to lush green Kullu Valley. Descend into Manali through cedar forests alongside the Beas River. Check into your hotel in Manali — hot showers, warm beds, and a well-earned celebration dinner.
Final morning in the mountains — breakfast and a fond farewell to Manali and the Himalayas. Begin the descent from the mountains back to the plains, following the scenic Beas River. Ride through the Aut Tunnel and the historic town of Mandi. Cross Pandoh Dam — a stunning reservoir set against the Dhauladhar range. Join the smooth, fast Kiratpur-Nerchowk Expressway for the final sprint toward Chandigarh. Reflect on the incredible 1,200 km Himalayan loop you have just completed.
